EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
